Lefkada

Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea on Greece's west coast, connected to the mainland by a causeway and floating bridge, measuring about 35 kilometers north to south and 15 kilometers east to west, with 21,900 residents in the municipality at the 2021 census. Settled by Corinthians in antiquity and later ruled by Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian powers before joining Greece in 1864, it has been proposed by the archaeologist Wilhelm Dorpfeld as a possible model for Homer's Ithaca; according to legend the poet Sappho leapt to her death from the cliffs of Cape Lefkada, the writer Lafcadio Hearn was born on the island and named for it, and Lefkada is today known internationally as a windsurfing destination, particularly around Vasiliki.
