Lete (Mygdonia)

Lete was an ancient city in Mygdonia, a region of the kingdom of Macedon, at a site corresponding to the village of Aivati, also called Ajvatovo, north of modern Thessaloniki near the settlement of Liti. According to ancient sources the city took its name from the goddess Leto, who was worshipped at a nearby sanctuary. Its necropolis yielded two significant archaeological finds, the Derveni papyrus and the ornate bronze Derveni krater. Lete later became a Roman Catholic titular see and appeared in Byzantine ecclesiastical records as a bishopric under Thessalonica, eventually merging with the See of Rentina.
