Liaoyang is a prefecture level city in east central Liaoning province, China, on the Taizi River about an hour's drive south of the provincial capital Shenyang, with a population of 1,604,580 recorded in the 2020 census. It is one of northeast China's oldest continuously inhabited cities, having served as capital of the Liaodong Commandery under the Qin and Han dynasties and briefly as capital of the Later Jin dynasty under Nurhaci in 1621. The city is home to the White Pagoda, dating to 1189 during the Liao dynasty.
