Liverpool is a port city and metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England, on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary near the Irish Sea, about 178 miles northwest of London. Its population was estimated at roughly 509,000 in 2024. The city grew rich on Atlantic trade from the eighteenth century onward, developed one of the world's great historic waterfronts around the Pier Head and Albert Dock, and is known internationally today as the birthplace of the Beatles and for its two major football clubs.
