The capital and largest city of the United Kingdom, on the River Thames in southeastern England, and the seat of the UK Parliament and the Crown. The built-up area of Greater London is the largest in Western Europe, with a population of roughly 9.09 million as of 2024. In 1854 the physician John Snow traced a cholera outbreak in the Soho district to a single contaminated water pump on Broad Street, a founding episode of epidemiology conducted before germ theory itself was established.
