Luneburg

Luneburg is a city in the German state of Lower Saxony about 50 kilometers southeast of Hamburg, with 74,785 residents as of the end of 2024. First mentioned in a charter dated 13 August 956, it prospered as a Hanseatic League member on the strength of its salt production, which supplied the salt used to preserve herring caught in the Baltic Sea, gaining town privileges in 1189 and free imperial city status in 1392 before the League's decline brought economic contraction after about 1560; its historic center survived the Second World War largely undamaged, unlike nearby Hamburg, and the city has rebuilt its economy in part around Leuphana University, founded in 1989.
