Lünen is a town of around 86,000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on both banks of the River Lippe north of Dortmund, and is the largest town in the Unna district within the Ruhr Area. In 2009 it built a biogas plant generating electricity from animal waste, which the town describes as the first public electricity supply of its kind in the world, supplying heat and power to about 26,000 homes.
