Makhachkala, previously known as Petrovskoye from 1844 to 1857 and Port-Petrovsk from 1857 to 1921, or by the local Kumyk name Anji, is the capital and largest city of Dagestan, Russia. Located on the Caspian Sea, it covers 468.13 square kilometers with a population of over 623,254, while its urban agglomeration spans over 3,712 square kilometers with roughly 1 million residents, making it the fourth-largest city in the Caucasus and the largest in the North Caucasus and North Caucasian Federal District.
