Malang is a landlocked city in East Java, Indonesia, and the province's second most populous city. Its population was about 843,800 at the 2020 census. With roots tracing to the Singhasari Kingdom and a 760 AD inscription, Malang became a municipality in 1914 under Dutch rule and is nicknamed the "Flower City" for its temperate, elevated climate; it is a major educational center, home to Brawijaya University and Malang State University.
