Manhattan

Manhattan is an island borough of New York City in the northeastern United States, coextensive with New York County and the geographically smallest of the city's five boroughs by land area. The borough sits almost entirely on Manhattan Island, bounded by the Hudson River to the west, the East River to the east, and the Harlem River to the north, and extends about 21.6 kilometers in length and 3.7 kilometers at its widest point. Its total area is 87.69 square kilometers, of which roughly 58.7 square kilometers is land and the rest open water, making it the most densely populated county in the United States, with a 2020 census population of 1,694,251. Manhattan also includes several smaller islands in its waters, among them Roosevelt Island, Governors Island and Liberty Island, and its bedrock, principally Manhattan schist, underlies the dense cluster of buildings across its Midtown and Lower Manhattan districts.
