Manokwari is the capital and largest town of Indonesia's West Papua province and seat of Manokwari Regency, on the Bird's Head Peninsula of Western New Guinea, with about 132,300 residents as of 2024 across 114.3 square kilometers. One of only seven Indonesian provincial capitals without formal city status, it was known to early European visitors as Dory, Dorery or Dorey, and it saw violent protest in August 2019 when the provincial legislature building was set on fire during broader unrest across Papua.
