Marawi is a component city and the capital of Lanao del Sur province, in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Settled in 1639 and renamed Marawi in 1956, it had a 2024 census population of 259,993 and sits on the shores of Lake Lanao, primarily inhabited by the Maranao people. In 2017 the city suffered extensive damage during the five month Siege of Marawi, when militants affiliated with the Islamic State invaded the city before government forces declared the battle over that October.
