Marienberg is a town in the Erzgebirgskreis district of Saxony, Germany, about 31 kilometers south of Chemnitz on a plateau north of the main ridge of the Ore Mountains. It was founded on April 27, 1521, by Henry the Pious, Duke of Saxony, as a silver mining town after silver was discovered nearby in 1519, with mining reaching its peak in 1540. The towns historic old town and the surrounding mining landscape form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Ore Mountain Mining Region, and Marienberg served as capital of the former Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis district until 2008. As of 2024, the town had about 16,139 residents.
