Martvili is a small town in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of western Georgia. Its monastery served as Samegrelo's clerical center during the Middle Ages. Under Soviet rule, from 1936 to 1990, the town was named Gegechkori, after the Old Bolshevik Sasha Gegechkori.
