Masterton is a large town in New Zealand Greater Wellington Region, on the North Island about 100 kilometers northeast of Wellington, and the administrative center of Masterton District. Its urban area has about 22,600 residents, with the wider district holding about 28,900 people as of June 2025. Founded in 1854 by the Small Farms Association led by Joseph Masters, the town overtook Greytown to become the Wairarapa primary center by the 1870s. It serves as headquarters for the annual Golden Shears sheep shearing competition.
