Maumere is the administrative seat of Sikka Regency and the second-largest town on Flores Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province, on the island's northern coast, with an estimated urban population of about 79,515 in mid-2024. A 1992 earthquake and tsunami destroyed roughly 90 percent of its buildings, after which it rebuilt and became a religious center as seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maumere from 2005; its once-renowned coral reefs had suffered heavy damage from blast fishing and pollution by a 2007 assessment.
