Mayaguez, Puerto Rico

Mayaguez is the ninth largest municipality in Puerto Rico and the principal city of its metropolitan area, on the island's central west coast. It was established on September 18, 1760 as Pueblo de Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria de Mayaguez, reached villa status in 1836 and received a city charter in 1877, with the Spanish crown granting it the formal title Excelente Ciudad de Mayaguez in 1894. The 2020 census recorded 73,077 residents. Mayaguez is home to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, described as the Caribbean's leading engineering institution, and its canneries packed roughly 80 percent of the tuna products consumed in the United States between 1962 and 1998.
