Merseburg is a town in central Germany, in southern Saxony-Anhalt, on the river Saale about 14 kilometers south of Halle and 30 kilometers west of Leipzig. It is the capital of the Saalekreis district and had around 35,000 inhabitants. The town held a diocese founded by Archbishop Adalbert of Magdeburg, and the University of Merseburg is located within it.
