Methone, also called Mothone, was a town in the southwestern corner of ancient Messenia, valued in antiquity for its excellent harbour and healthy setting, standing at the tip of a rocky ridge running into the sea opposite the island of Sapientza. A small offshore rock the geographer Pausanias called Mothon sheltered its harbour entrance, and the 19th century traveler William Martin Leake found the site occupied by a tower and lantern connected by a bridge to the fortifications of the modern town of Methoni.
