Mieza (Macedonia)

Mieza was an ancient town in Macedonia, on the site of modern Lefkadia near Naousa in the Imathia region of Central Macedonia, Greece. It is historically significant as the place where Aristotle tutored Alexander the Great, between 343 and 340 BC, after Philip II of Macedon hired the philosopher and provided the Temple of the Nymphs as a classroom in exchange for rebuilding Stagira, the hometown of Aristotle, which Philip had earlier destroyed. The ancient geographer Ptolemy counted Mieza among the cities of Emathia, and excavations beginning in 1954 have uncovered Macedonian tombs and a Hellenistic theater at the site.
