Mitrovica, Kosovo

Mitrovica is a city in northern Kosovo divided along the Ibar River, with a mainly ethnic-Albanian southern section and a mainly ethnic-Serb northern section; the 2024 census recorded 72,662 inhabitants across the municipality, 64,742 in the south and 7,920 in the north. Long a single town, it has been divided along ethnic lines in practice since 1999 and was formally split into two municipalities in 2008 under the Ahtisaari Package that accompanied Kosovo's move toward independence; the Mitrovica Bridge across the Ibar has become a widely recognized symbol of the divide between the city's Albanian and Serb communities.
