Montego Bay

Montego Bay is the capital of St. James Parish on Jamaica's northwest coast, with a population of 110,115 at the 2011 census, the second-largest English-speaking city in the Caribbean after Kingston. Its name comes from the Spanish word for lard, manteca, from its early use as a Spanish colonial lard-export port; it later grew into a major sugar-producing center under British rule and was the site of the Baptist War of 1831-1832, Jamaica's last major slave revolt, in which the rebel leader Samuel Sharpe was executed. Today the city is the center of Jamaica's tourism industry, and its Donald Sangster International Airport is the busiest in the English-speaking Caribbean, having served 4.3 million passengers in 2017.
