Montreal is in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec, covering most of the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. As of the 2021 Canadian census the city had a population of 1,762,949 and a metropolitan population of 4,291,732, making it the largest city in Quebec, the second-largest in Canada, and the eighth-largest in North America; it is also the largest primarily French-speaking city in the Americas. It was founded on 17 May 1642 as Ville-Marie, City of Mary, on the southern shore of the island, with Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve as its first governor. Canada and the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers do not yet have their own entities on this atlas; all are recorded as open entity requests.
