Morelia is the capital and most populous city of the Mexican state of Michoacan, situated in the Guayangareo Valley and serving as the seat of the municipality of Morelia. Spanish settlers under Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza founded it in 1541 as Valladolid, and it was renamed Morelia after Mexican independence in honor of Jose Maria Morelos, who was born there. In 1991 the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved historic buildings and street layout.
