Mosul is a major city in northern Iraq, serving as capital of the Nineveh Governorate, and is the second-largest city in Iraq after Baghdad, situated on the banks of the Tigris river. Across the river lie the ruins of ancient Nineveh, once capital of the Assyrian Empire, and Mosul itself grew into a major medieval trading and religious center before suffering extensive destruction during the 2016 to 2017 battle to retake the city from the Islamic State.
