Munda is the largest settlement on New Georgia Island in Solomon Islands' Western Province, overlooking the Roviana Lagoon. Japan built an airstrip there in November 1942 to support the Guadalcanal campaign, and Allied forces captured it after heavy fighting in the Battle of Munda Point in August 1943. The wartime airstrip is now Munda Airport, upgraded with New Zealand development funding in 2013 and 2017, and the town has become a diving and World War II heritage destination.
