Nagykallo

Nagykallo is a town in Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg County in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary, with a population of 10,483 across 68.55 square kilometers according to 2005 data. It became a market town after King Charles Robert granted it market rights in 1315, was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1556 and then refortified, and was attacked by Francis II Rakoczi's forces at its castle in 1703 during the Hungarian independence movement. Nagykallo served as the seat of Szabolcs County from 1747 until 1867, when the seat moved to nearby Nyiregyhaza, and it regained town status in 1989; it remains a historic center of Jewish heritage with synagogues, cemeteries, and the shrine of Grand Rebbe Itzhak Isaac of Kaliv.
