Nanterre is the prefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department in the western suburbs of Paris, France, about 11 kilometers northwest of the center of Paris, with a population of 97,783 as of 2023. Its eastern part, bordering the communes of Courbevoie and Puteaux, contains a small part of the La Defense business district and some of the tallest buildings in the Paris region, and because the headquarters of many major corporations sit in La Defense, the court of Nanterre is well known for the high-profile lawsuits and trials it handles. The city is also home to the Paris West University Nanterre La Defense, one of the largest universities in the Paris region.
