Nashik, formerly spelled Nasik, is a city in the northern region of the Indian state of Maharashtra, situated on the banks of the river Godavari about 165 kilometers northeast of the state capital Mumbai. One of Hinduism's four sites for the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage festival, Nashik has also grown into a major center of grape cultivation and wine production, earning it recognition as the wine capital of India.
