Nasiriyah

Nasiriyah is a city in Iraq on the lower Euphrates River, about 360 kilometers south-southeast of Baghdad near the ancient ruins of Ur, and serves as capital of the Dhi Qar Governorate. Established in 1872 by Nasir al-Sadoon Pasha of the Al Sadun family, for whom it is named, it became administrative center of the Muntafiq sanjak that same year and historically held a population of Muslims, Mandaeans and Jews, though inhabitants today are predominantly Shia Muslim. The 2024 census recorded a population of about 704,976, the ninth largest city in Iraq, and Nasiriyah is a major transportation hub and center of date cultivation, with a city museum holding extensive Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian and Abbasid collections.
