Nassau is the capital and largest city of the Bahamas, located on New Providence Island. It serves as the country's center of commerce, education, law, administration and media, and is historically notable as a former pirate stronghold. Named for William III of England, Prince of Orange-Nassau, the city was founded in 1670 as Charles Town and rebuilt as Nassau in 1695. It had a population of 296,732 as of 2022.
