Nellore is a city on the Penna River in Andhra Pradesh, India, about 170 kilometers north of Chennai, with 600,869 residents at the 2011 census, the fourth most populous city in the state. An administrative and cultural center under successive dynasties, its district was renamed in 2008 to honor Potti Sriramulu, who fasted to death campaigning for the linguistic state of Andhra Pradesh; nicknamed the Shrimp Capital of India for its aquaculture industry, Nellore serves as district headquarters and recorded a nominal GDP of 16,989 crore rupees in 2023-24.
