Ness Ziona is a city in Israel's Central District, about 10 kilometers inland from the Mediterranean coast south of Tel Aviv, with a population of 47,267 in 2024. It was founded in 1883 when the Russian Jewish pioneer Reuben Lehrer settled on land bought from the German Templer Gustav Reisler, and took its present name in 1891 when Michael Halperin named it after a phrase from the Book of Jeremiah meaning banner toward Zion; it was officially recognized as a city in 1992. The city is home to the Israel Institute for Biological Research and the Kiryat Weizmann Science Park, a hub for Israeli technology companies.
