Neustadt bei Coburg

Neustadt bei Coburg is a town in the Coburg district of northern Bavaria, Germany, about 15 kilometers northeast of Coburg, with a population of 14,824 as of late 2024. Founded in the second half of the 12th century by Count Hermann von Wolweswac with the building of a castle, it grew as a stop on the trade route between Nuremberg and Leipzig, received city rights in 1316, and came under Coburg's control in 1353 within the domain of the House of Wettin until the First World War. The town suffered through the Thirty Years' War and two major fires, one in 1636 that destroyed more than half the town and another in 1839 that destroyed 179 of its 226 houses along with the city hall and archives; after the First World War, a 1919 referendum led Neustadt and the Free State of Coburg to join Bavaria rather than Thuringia. The town remains predominantly Lutheran.
