Newton, Massachusetts

Newton is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, about 8 miles west of downtown Boston, bordering Brookline, Watertown, Waltham, Weston, Wellesley and Needham, with 88,923 residents at the 2020 census and an estimated 90,741 in 2025. First settled in 1639 as part of Cambridge, it became a separate town in 1681 and achieved city status in 1874, developing into one of North America's earliest commuter suburbs after the Boston and Worcester Railroad arrived in 1834; known as the Garden City, it comprises thirteen distinct villages rather than a single center, hosts the Boston Marathon's Heartbreak Hill, and is home to Boston College and Newton-Wellesley Hospital along the Charles River.
