How did the Promenade des Anglais in Nice get its name?
It is named in tribute to the British community that helped develop it.
Its story began in 1824, when the British Reverend Lewis Way encouraged the construction of a coastal walkway to provide work for local residents affected by a particularly harsh winter. Quickly embraced by the English winter visitors, the promenade gradually expanded and became known as the Promenade des Anglais in tribute to the British community that contributed to its development.
