Nieuwpoort, South Holland

Nieuwpoort is a small city in the Netherlands, part of the municipality of Molenlanden in the province of South Holland. It was granted city rights in 1283 after two local lords donated land around 1270 to found the settlement. Long shaped by sieges and destruction in the medieval period, the town stabilized in the seventeenth century, declined during the economic crisis of the 1930s and the Second World War, and was extensively restored between 1970 and 1998. As of 2001 its built-up area held 619 residents, with the wider statistical district counting about 1,370 people by 2006; Nieuwpoort was an independent municipality until it merged into Liesveld in 1986 and later into Molenwaard in 2013.
