Niigata is a city in the northern part of Niigata Prefecture, Japan, serving as the prefecture capital and most populous city and designated by government ordinance. It is the most populous city on the west coast of Honshu and the second most populous in the Chubu region after Nagoya, and it faces the Sea of Japan and Sado Island. As of September 2022 the city had an estimated population of 779,049 and a population density of 1,072 persons per square kilometer, across a total area of 726.45 square kilometers; Greater Niigata, the Niigata Metropolitan Employment Area, had a GDP of about 43.3 billion US dollars as of 2010.
