Nikaia, Illyria

Nikaia was an ancient settlement in southern Illyria, in the territory of the Bylliones tribe, located about 1,500 meters south of Byllis near the modern village of Klos in the Fier District of Albania. Though originally an indigenous Illyrian community, it adopted Greek-style civic organization and institutions by the fourth century BC, becoming bilingual through contact with its Greek neighbors, and scholars debate whether it fully qualifies as a Greek polis. The site had walled fortifications by the fifth and fourth centuries BC and contained a Greek theatre, and its name was recorded by the Byzantine geographer Stephanus of Byzantium.
