Norak, also spelled Nurek, is a town in western Tajikistan about 75 kilometers east of Dushanbe, built to house workers at the nearby Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River. Construction of the dam began in 1961 and finished in 1980, and at 300 meters high it was, at completion, the tallest dam in the world; its power station has an installed capacity of 3,015 megawatts.
