Northeim

Northeim is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, and the administrative seat of Northeim district, with a population of 27,522 as of December 2023. It first appears in a document from around 800 recording a property transfer to the Abbey of Fulda, became the seat of a county administered by local nobles by the 10th century, gained formal town status in 1252, and belonged to the Hanseatic League from 1384 to 1554. After a railway from Hanover to Gottingen was completed in 1854, followed by further lines in 1868 and 1878, Northeim grew into a significant railway junction, and its historic half-timbered town center largely survived Allied bombing in 1944 and 1945.
