Nuremberg is the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria and the largest in the cultural region of Franconia, with about 546,000 inhabitants. A major medieval trading center and later an important site in Nazi Germany, the city is known today for its well-preserved old town and castle, its Christmas market, and the postwar Nuremberg trials that were held there after the Second World War.
