Okayama is the capital city of Okayama Prefecture in the Chugoku region of Japan, founded on June 1, 1889. The Okayama metropolitan area centered on the city has the largest urban employment zone in the Chugoku region, and as of February 2023 the city had an estimated population of 700,940 and a population density of 890 people per square kilometer across a total area of 789.95 square kilometers.
