Olsztyn is the capital of Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, with 169,793 residents in 2021. Founded around 1346 when the Teutonic Knights began building a castle there and granted municipal rights in 1353, it is known for its association with the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who administered the town from its castle and directed its defense against Teutonic attack between 1516 and 1521; seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Warmia and home to the University of Warmia and Masuria, founded in 1999, Olsztyn is regularly ranked among Poland's most livable cities.
