Oranjestad is the capital and most populous of Aruba's eight regions, on the island's southwestern coast; Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Founded around 1796 and known locally in Papiamento as Playa, meaning beach, the town takes its official name from the Dutch House of Orange in honor of King William I of the Netherlands, and it grew from a trading settlement on Paardenbaai into the island's primary hub for tourism, shipping and commerce. Its population was 28,658 at the 2020 census.
