Orneae

Southern Europe

Orneae, also spelled Orneai, was a town in ancient Argolis in Greece, mentioned by Homer in the Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad and said to take its name either from Orneus, a son of Erechtheus, or from the naiad Ornea, daughter of the river god Asopus; its site is placed near modern Lyrkeia in the Peloponnese, on the borders of Phliasia and Sicyonia about 120 stadia from Argos. Its people, the Orneatae, kept their independence as Cynurians after the Dorian conquest of Argos and were recorded as Argive allies by Thucydides in 418 BC, but Argos destroyed the town in 416 BC during the Peloponnesian War.
