Oropus was an ancient Greek town on the disputed border between Attica and Boeotia, capital of a small coastal district called Oropia along the Asopus river. Control of the town passed repeatedly between Athens and Boeotia. Athens held it before the Peloponnesian War, lost it in 412 BC, and regained it after Philip the Second returned it following the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC. Around 402 BC the town was temporarily moved inland before returning to its coastal site. Its territory held the celebrated sanctuary of the hero Amphiaraus. The modern village of Oropos stands about two miles from the sea, while Skala Oropou is thought to mark the likely site of the ancient coastal town.
