Panipat is an industrial city in the Indian state of Haryana, about 95 kilometers north of Delhi, with a population of roughly 294,000 at the 2011 census. It is famous as the site of three major battles, in 1526, 1556 and 1761, that helped establish Mughal rule in India and, in the third battle, ended in the defeat of the Maratha Confederacy. Known as the city of weavers and the textile city, Panipat today has an industrial base built on wool and cotton milling, saltpetre refining and the manufacture of glass and electrical goods.
