Penonome is the capital of Cocle province in central Panama, on the Pan-American Highway between Panama City and the Azuero Peninsula. It is a commercial center for the surrounding cattle-ranching and agricultural interior and lies near the forested highlands around Cerro Guacamaya and El Cope. The city preserves traditional Panamanian folk crafts, including cocobolo wood carving and other artisan work long associated with the country's interior provinces.
