Pierre is the capital city of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County, designated as the state capital when South Dakota achieved statehood on November 2, 1889. Despite its central location, it is the second least populous U.S. state capital after Montpelier, Vermont; the city sits along the Missouri River and was named for a prominent fur trader from Saint Louis.
